Time for a good house cleaning.
Published September 24th, 2018
About a 10 minute read
Back in the day, one of our teenagers (who will remain nameless) would very rarely EVER clean up her bedroom! It didn’t matter how much we got on her or how much we explained the benefits of a clean space! She preferred a messy room. Maybe you have experienced something similar?
It’s crazy how quickly dirt and clutter can pile up in our own home environment. Wouldn’t it just be so nice to come home from work or school each day to a perfectly clean bedroom and house? How cool would it be if the lawn is mowed, grocery shopping done, and a nutritious and delicious meal is ready to go?

Well, things don’t happen that way, do they? Whether it’s our bedrooms, garages, kitchens, or yards, the junk accumulates, and then, finally, the time comes to take action. As my Mother would say, “It’s time for a good house cleaning.”
However, I’m not referring to a physical cleaning of your house. I’m referring to a different house cleaning, an “internal” cleaning. I’m talking about a cleansing of our thoughts, words, and attitudes. I’m talking about changing the way we think, speak, and act towards ourselves and those in our own inner circle.

It’s crazy to think how we sometimes just take for granted those that are with us the most. Starting with your own family will change the way you view the world around yourself. We all know that those we are with on a daily basis care for us the most and do the most to help us succeed. Yet, many times, we treat a stranger or a friend with more respect and honor than we treat those closest to us in our own “home” environments. It certainly doesn’t make any sense, does it?
Sometimes you can sense that some things just aren’t right but it’s so difficult to pinpoint the real issues to solve. Whether or not you can pinpoint the issue, inevitably, you get to a point where something implodes. Maybe it’s a lack of respect, maybe it’s a lack of improvement, or maybe it’s an injury or a string of subpar results.

Whenever I reached that tipping point in a person’s development process, I would have to say enough is enough. It’s at that point in time, where I really got serious about finding solutions to the problems that were manifesting and time and time again, here’s what I found...

I discovered that many of the real solutions to difficult issues seemed to point back to myself. The solutions would call for me to make some kind of change. Many of the changes I had to make came as a result of my own environments, as a young boy. I started to really understand that my environment had a real POWER and if I was willing to make some positive changes, it would have a positive impact on those around me!

I realized that our environments work very similar to the ocean’s currents. These currents aren’t seen physically but are beneath the surface always running in our
daily lives. These currents have varying degrees of power that can move us forward towards our destinies or move us backwards, away from our destinies. The good news is that we can actually determine whether we effortlessly ride with the current or struggle and fight against it.

When I was younger, I was in Hawaii surfing and the waves were a really good size. As the waves would crash to shore, the salt water needed to get back out to sea, so it would sometimes produce a strong counter current, called a riptide. If you have ever been caught in a rip tide, you know that’s not a good thing, in fact it can be a really bad thing. Well, somehow, I got caught in the riptide and the current took me and my surfboard back out to sea, about a mile from the shore. I actually panicked for a moment as my thoughts turned negative. I started thinking I was never going to make it back to shore. Actually, the first thought that came to me was I would be attacked by sharks. Thankfully, the sharks never came! You can also probably imagine how relieved I was, when I finally made it back safely to the shore. I was pretty shaken up with the experience, but I’ll never forget experiencing the power of the ocean’s environment and the incredibly strong currents it produces. Here’s a keen observation…
When we float with the current, the less effort it takes to flow forward.
However, when we float against the current, there is more effort required to flow forward. The crazy thing about my riptide experience was that I was actually flowing with the current in the riptide, but it was pulling me further and further away from shore. I was flowing effortlessly in the opposite direction that I wanted to go. Confusing, right?
See, it’s easy to get off track and travel in a direction where we know we ought not
to go. It’s even worse when we’re unaware that the track we were on actually runs in a direction away from our goals and dreams. When a change of direction occurs, I would hope that you would want to tap into someone who has been on the journey guiding your change of direction.

It’s interesting how much talk there is about cleaning the environment and how good it will be for our kids and generations to follow, if we just start doing something about it now. But perhaps we can also focus on cleaning up our personal “home” environments. I know, from personal experience, that there is so much power that a family can unleash when they do that together!
It’s time to clean up the home environment.
Let’s begin to eliminate undesirable behavior from our home environments! Let’s get rid of the thoughts, words, and attitudes that are creating poisonous toxins in our family environment. Sometimes these toxins are subtle and hard to see, but they are present and they will keep growing.  Sabotaging our goals and dreams and stealing the joy and happiness in our own life and in the lives of those closest to us. So, how can we eliminate these toxins from our home environment?

I’m glad you asked! Here’s something my wife, Heidi, and I decided to do many years ago, when our children were younger, that continues to pay huge dividends in our family today. We wanted to change the thinking and speaking in our house from negative to positive. So, we decided to make a major change in our home environment.
We set up two jars. One jar was the “Negative” jar and the other jar was the “I can’t” jar. If someone spoke a negative word about themselves or others or said they couldn’t do something we told them to do, they had to put a portion of their weekly allowance into the jars. Naturally, everyone hated parting with their “allowance money” and eventually
they complied. This positive environmental change was met with some resistance at first but the kids started really enjoying every time that I had to put money into the jars. In fact, they say to this day, that I actually had to give up the most money. Of course, I’m still disputing that fact. Lol!

I can’t even begin to explain how making this one change to our home environment solved so many issues we had raising our kids. In a short time, all the positive thinking, attitudes, and speaking started manifesting into positive behavior changes. It was unbelievable how the attitudes changed, and, in turn, how the “energy” in the home environment became much more conducive to “success.” The cool thing is that everyone started to see a ton of positive changes and results in their own lives.

By making this one change in our home environment, not only did everyone understand the POWER of their environments, but also the effects it had on their goals, dreams, and lives. They are more sensitive today to their own environments and, in turn, know how to adapt to and maneuver life’s currents, instead of having to always fight so hard against it.
Remember: “A clean home environment brings a strong current that can flow you effortlessly closer towards achieving your goals and dreams.”
Even if your kids are older, it’s never a bad time to change your home environment from negative to positive. In fact, Admiral William H. McRaven, gave a commencement speech explaining to a graduating class at the University of Texas that if they want to change the world, they can start by making their own bed! Take a listen to this inspirational commencement address (and feel free to pass it on to your teenagers too)!

Until next time...Tim

P.S.
I am also glad to report that my teenager (who’s no longer a teenager) now loves to keep her personal space free from clutter.
