The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. This is what the traditional tennis model does. When we follow the traditional advice to do more of the same things, we keep getting more of the same results..
results we don’t want!
What exactly are those results we are getting that we don’t want? Well, two of the more common results that I can think of off the top of my head are slow improvement and inconsistent results.
How much do you think you have to pay to get your kid to consistently bend their knees or move their feet? How many swings must your child do to finally nail down their forehand technique?
If you’re following the traditional player development system’s advice, you’re going to pay a boatload of money to get all those swings down perfect. And then it’s not a shoo-in that it will actually work. That’s why it’s a failing model!
Don’t get me wrong, there’re are many good coaches out there that mean well and work really hard to get your kid to improve their tennis. However, they have a near impossible job because they don’t have enough time to teach all those technical aspects of tennis, in just a few short lessons.
So, what can you do? Well, more lessons, more swings, more tournaments… more of the same stuff isn’t the answer. So what is?
One thing I found that works is getting the kid more prepared for lessons. That way the lessons can be more efficient and MORE can be accomplished in each lesson, no matter if it’s a private or group situation.
When the player is more prepared for the lesson the coach can do more and do a better job of what they are good at (and what you’re paying them to do). When all of this happens the coach is free to actually coach your player!
Here’s something that you can start with that worked for me!
You can start by taking the important information your son or daughter is learning in their lessons, and have them practice doing MORE of these things off-the-court in between lessons.
That way, when your son or daughter goes to their next lesson, they’re MORE prepared to successfully execute what the coach is telling them, in their drills on-the-court, in practice.
Now, because they are MORE prepared for their lessons, the lessons can be more efficient. And because the lessons are MORE efficient, there is MORE improvement for the player and better performance results!
And what Parent (or Coach) wouldn’t want MORE of this!
I’ll give you some cool things your kid can do off-the-court, in between their lessons, in another blog!
Until next time,
Tim
