A KEY Piece of the
Development Puzzle.

About a 7 minute read
Our company, Complete Performance, specializes in high performance tennis development for aspiring athletes at all levels. To ensure that we can properly place a player into one of CP’s online tennis academy programs, there is a screening process, which includes a short player questionnaire, followed by a Breakthrough Development Session, which is a personal one-on-one phone interview with the Parents and Player.

In a recent phone call, a mother was extremely concerned for her daughter. Her frustration wasn’t directed AT her daughter, mind you, which is a good thing.  She actually had a lot of confidence in her daughter and believed her girl could do whatever she set her mind to! In speaking with the girl, I began to share this same belief.

However, her frustration (and worry) was her intuition telling her that her daughter may not be on the right path to find her potential and reach her goals. As the call progressed, it was clear to me that both the Mother and Daughter were getting more and more anxious and showing their frustration towards the lack of improvement and inconsistent performance results.

Prior to the call, I had reviewed the girl’s questionnaire answers (see below). I reassured them that the answers she gave were actually quite normal.

It was obvious that the girl was missing a KEY piece of the development puzzle and I knew that if she would bring this one KEY piece and fit it into her current development puzzle, this whole process would make much more sense to them. They would be able to see the total picture more clearly and that would ease much of their fears and lower their anxiety levels. Here are the young girls answers in the questionnaire.

1 - Briefly describe the player's goals.

Become a professional tennis player

2 - What is the player's age?

16

3 - What is the player's dominant hand?

Right Handed

4 - What level of tournaments does the player compete in?

Advanced

5 - When does the player perform better?

6 - What percent of the tennis game do you believe is mental?

80%

7 - What areas would you like to see improvements? (Check All That Apply)

-Composure under pressure and nervousness
-Focus and concentration in competitions
-Emotional and mental toughness

8 - How many times per week do you train with an academy, a coach, both, or neither?

9 - Briefly describe how you believe you will benefit from having a comprehensive development plan.

What is a comprehensive development plan?

10 - Briefly describe why you will be good fit for our online academy, CP Elite? As well as how you believe we will benefit from having you on our Team?

Because I know I can be amazing!
A KEY Piece of the Development Puzzle is having a proven plan
They were both listening intently now!

The Mom asked, “what is the KEY piece?”

I answered, “the KEY piece is having a plan! In one of your questionnaire questions, you answered what is a comprehensive plan, so I knew you didn’t have a plan! And I understand how you feel because I felt the same way!”

I continued, “It sucks when you don’t know exactly what to do or if what you’re doing is really working when you’re not sure you’re on track to reach your goal of becoming a professional tennis player.”
This is the core cause of much of their frustrations and worries.

When you don’t have a development plan, you really can’t know if you’re on the right pathway! And if you don’t have a plan and follow the plan, you can’t build trust and faith that what you’re doing each and every day is the right thing and it’s tough to sustain faith that you’re getting closer to your goals.
When you have a plan, you can control your day to day training and begin to trust in the process, you can believe in your training. Get on a proven plan and start trusting in your training and tap into the POWER of belief.
That’s the KEY piece of the puzzle.

Until next time!
