DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE ON THE DAY THAT EACH OF YOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN? I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE DAY THAT EACH OF MY FOUR CHILDREN (MY TWO GIRLS AND TWO BOYS) CAME INTO THE WORLD!
I especially remember the day that our first was born. It was still wintery cold, as we had just entered the first days of spring, in Minnesota. My wife, Heidi, was starting contractions early in the day and she decided to stay at home a little longer in her bed, rather than having her contractions in a hospital bed.

I figured that since she is an experienced Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse, I should follow her call. Heck, we even took a few birthing classes together as a couple, so I thought that I was good to go! Lol!

Within hours, the contractions started getting more intense and more frequent. So, the decision was made to drive to the hospital and check her in. We were in the car quickly, as she had everything packed ahead of time. I even had the situational awareness to have the gas tank filled up since it was a "long ten-minute drive to the hospital" (give or take a few red lights).

As I’m in the car, I remember calmly taking a few deep breaths as my thoughts flashed forward into the future. I knew that I wasn’t the slightest bit prepared for it but I hit the gas (with the car in reverse, of course) and stormed down the driveway all the same.

I should have remembered that our driveway was very narrow and focused a little more as I was backing out. It was then that I made a slight miscalculation and the car bumped vehemently over the curb! Oh jeez!! Sorry Heidi!!

As we were on the way to the hospital the contractions just got more intense and frequent!
So, I’m trying to breath slowly and think clearly.  The most important thing on my mind right at that moment was getting to the freakin hospital before that baby pops out! Those few birthing classes definitely had not trained me for a premature birth, in the car!
In a record seven minutes, Heidi and I rolled into the hospital’s emergency entry (thank God for those green and long yellow lights). We got Heidi out of the car and they wheeled her away as the contractions got more intense. It was time to find a parking spot, and I realized that I forgot to do that on my practice runs to the hospital!

By the time I got to the room, the doctor and nurses were all clamored around the soon to be mother! A nurse rushed up to me with a bag and told me to go into the bathroom and quickly change into hospital scrubs. This is how I knew it was getting close. So, I got redressed and as I was putting on my pants, I noticed that the scrubs didn’t have a draw string attached. There was no way that my pants were going to stay up!
"Jeez, not now" I thought. I could tell from all the commotion outside the bathroom that the big moment was drawing closer. It was now or never. So, holding up the oversized scrubs with my hands, I slipped out of the bathroom, walked around the doctor and nurses,
eased over to Heidi, and whispered to her my dilemma regarding the draw string missing. Keeping my pants up in front of these strangers was a top priority for me.
I should have known ahead of time that this wouldn’t be a top priority for her in that moment as she literally shouted at me to find a F#%&*@ belt.

Two minutes later (and I’m not kidding), my first child was born. It was a beautiful baby girl. We didn’t know ahead of time if we would be blessed with a girl or a boy, so we had names picked out either way. Since the baby was a girl, we named her Bethanie Lynn. Beth means “pledged to God”.

Alison, Chad, and Andrew were all born in the years to follow, and thankfully, we didn’t have this much drama (and I had pants that fit). I guess we were “experienced” parents now, right? I can still vividly recall looking at each of our children for the first time, feeling so proud and thinking how precious these little guys were! After they were born I would look at them and would start thinking of ALL the possibilities of their futures!
Now I want you to take a minute and think back to when your kids were born. Think about how you felt about them when you first laid eyes on them. They were so precious, right? I hope you still feel that way about them today, at this very moment! If you don’t, I understand completely! It doesn’t have to stay that way, though.

Why did I bring all this up? Why ask you to think back? Because, I want to remind myself and you that…
Human beings are born, Champions are raised.
Every human being born has the gifts, if developed, to become a champion. I’m proud to say that Heidi and I have raised four champions. Yet, only one of my children went on to play tennis professionally, win multiple Grand Slam titles, and win an Olympic Gold Medal.

Don't be fooled. My other three children are winning big in their individual life’s pursuits as well. They were all developed and equipped to follow their heart and use their unique talents to pursue their dreams. Their achievements are all across the board. Their achievements range from the highest levels of music, academia, military officer training, sports and high-performance development, entrepreneurism, digital product creation, company startups, and social media.

Even more importantly than what they are achieving, I’m so proud of who they are as people and what they are becoming. They are happy, thankful, grateful, patient, faithful, content, generous, kind, and caring to others. They are Champions.

And so are your children. I’m sure that you want for your children many of the same things that I wanted for mine. That’s the mission of this blog. To join you on this journey of raising your champion; sharing with you the ups, the downs, the highs, and the lows we experience, as parents, as we raise our children to become champions. So let’s go!

Until next time...Tim
